Caravan and boat covers: flyover and high carports explained

A caravan or boat is a big investment, and the Queensland sun is hard on seals, canvas and paint. A tall carport keeps the sun and hail off and makes loading up for a trip easier.

How high?

Measure the highest point of the van — including the air conditioner, solar panels and aerials — and add clearance. Caravan covers are commonly built 3.5 to 4.2 m high at the lowest point.

Flyover carports

Fixed to your house but raised above the gutter, a flyover gives the height without the roof feeling like a wall against the house. It also leaves a gap for hot air to escape.

Freestanding carports

Down the side of the house or at the back of the block, a freestanding carport can be built as tall and long as you need. Taller posts mean bigger footings for wind — the engineering takes care of that.

Access

Think about the turning circle as you back in, and keep posts out of the way of the van door and awning.

Approvals

Tall carports almost always need approval, and height near boundaries is controlled. We design to the rules and lodge it for you.
