How big can a shed or carport be in the Scenic Rim?

Out in Beaudesert, Canungra and on Tamborine Mountain, people want room for the caravan, the boat and the ride-on mower. The Scenic Rim planning scheme sets clear limits on how much outbuilding a residential lot can have.

The size caps

In residential zones, the combined floor area of all domestic outbuildings (sheds, garages, carports) on a lot is capped at:

  • 55 m² on a lot of 600 m² or less
  • 110 m² on a lot over 600 m² up to 2,000 m²
  • 200 m² on a lot over 2,000 m²

They must also be single storey and no taller than the house. The total counts what is already there, so measure the existing shed too.

Setbacks

The Scenic Rim uses its own setbacks instead of the state code: 6 m to the street in low density zones and 10 m in township, rural residential and rural zones. Side and rear setbacks start at 1.5 m in town, 3 to 5 m in rural residential and 6 m in the rural zone.

Every house needs a covered car space

The scheme asks every house to have at least one covered car park on site. If yours has none, a carport is often the simplest way to meet it.

Going over

Missing one of these in a residential zone makes council a referral agency on the building approval. It is not a no, just an extra step we can lodge for you.
