Roofing a deck or verandah: what to know

A deck without a roof gets used in winter mornings and not much else. A roof turns it into the most used room in the house — especially on acreage, where the verandah is where you sit and look out over the land.

Building the deck and roof together

If the deck is new, building the deck frame and the roof together is simpler: one set of posts carries both, one approval covers both, and one delivery brings the frame, roof and decking.

Insulated roofs over decks

An insulated panel roof keeps the deck cool and quiet in rain, and the finished ceiling is ready for downlights and fans. For a deck you will sit on every day, it is the most common choice.

Posts: steel, aluminium or timber

Steel and aluminium posts are maintenance-free. Timber posts give a warm, traditional look on verandahs and acreage homes. Timber-look steel posts give you the look without the upkeep.

Keep the view

On a deck with a view, roof height and beam position matter. We set the beam high enough that it does not cut across the view when you are sitting down.

Approvals

Decks over 10 m² or higher off the ground need approval, and the roof is part of the same application. We prepare and lodge it for you.
