Both keep the weather off your cars. The difference is what carries the roof: an attached carport uses your house for one side; a freestanding carport stands on its own posts.
Attached carports
- Usually the best value — the house carries one side
- Gives a covered walk from the car to the door
- Height depends on your eaves; a flyover fixes low eaves
- Needs a sound fascia or wall to fix to
Freestanding carports
- Goes anywhere — down the driveway, beside a shed, at the back of the block
- No fixing to the house, ideal for older or rendered homes
- Can be built tall for caravans and boats
- Needs posts on all sides and deeper footings for wind
Which one should you choose?
If you want the car close to the house and the eaves are a good height, attached is simple and good value. If the best spot is away from the house, you need extra height, or the house is not suited to fixing, go freestanding.
