Patio lighting and ceiling fans: planning downlights, fans and power

A patio gets used most in the evening. Good lighting and a ceiling fan are what make it an outdoor room instead of a roof — and they are far easier to put in while the patio is being built.

Insulated roofs make it easy

Downlights and fans fit straight into an insulated panel ceiling, with the cables hidden inside. With a single skin roof, lights fix to the beams instead.

How many downlights?

As a rough guide, one downlight for every 2 to 3 m² gives an even light for dining. Put them on a dimmer and add a separate circuit over the barbecue or kitchen bench.

Ceiling fans

Choose a fan rated for outdoor use. One fan suits a typical 6 × 4 m patio; long patios may need two. Keep the blades well clear of beams and doors.

Power points and extras

  • Weatherproof power points for the barbecue, heater or TV
  • LED strip lighting along beams or gutters
  • RGB lighting built into louvred roof frames
  • A switch inside the house so you are not walking out in the dark

Book your electrician early

All electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician. Book them to run cables during the build — we let you know the right day.
